15-year-old boy drowns as friends point and laugh in China

Cell phone video footage showing a 15-year-old boy drowning in a river as his friends laugh at him from ashore, failing to save him, has gone viral online.
The one-minute long video shows the teenager, identified as Mao Mao, struggling in the murky water, unable to yell for help. Recording the footage on shore were four of his friends, who laugh at him as he helplessly thrashes about less than two meters away. One of them can be heard saying "Mao Mao, you're not dead yet".

Around 45 seconds into the video, one of his friends is seen by the edge of the river trying to reach for Mao Mao and pull him up. After a brief attempt, however, he retreats and continues laughing. Eventually, Mao Mao stops struggling, and his body slowly sinks into the depths of the water.

An unnamed student from Mao Mao' school told reporters that he "chose to swim in the river, so when he was drowning, his friends thought it was a joke."
