Don’t Punish Amuwo-Odofin/Satellite Town for voting PDP — Rep Oghene begs FG, LASG

Hon Oghene Egoh, is the lawmaker representing Amuwo- Odofin Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the People Democratic Party, PDP. In this interview with the VANGUARD NEWS he speaks on the challenge of meeting the needs of his constituents among others.

There are diverse issues in the constituency as we speak. One is decayed infrastructure in Festac and Satellite town. These are federal government estates that were built over 40 years ago. For instance, Satellite and Festac towns have a centrally controlled sewage system. This sewage system that has been in existence for almost 40 years is posing serious health challenge in the communities. It is blocked and emitting dangerous effluents. There are lots of bad roads in Amuwo Odofin including Festac and Satellite towns and their environs. Roads linking Kirikiri and Abule-Ado are worse.

The major problem is the Badagry Expressway. The road that was supposed to be completed by the past administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola. He promised to complete it by 2012 unfortunately, only 35 percent has been completed by 2015. It is pathetic. The worst of all is the Mile2 to Orile section, which was rehabilitated by Julius Berger. In less than two years, it has been destroyed. People spend quality time on the road and it is very dangerous. The effect of this traffic jam is recurring robbery attacks unleashed on the citizenry by hoodlums. I am appealing to the federal government to address these problems as soon as possible. The road leading to Navy town, a federal establishment is bad.

The road that leads to Kirikiri Prison which is also a federal establishment is a death trap. This is the state of my constituency. I feel very sad, unfortunately, I am an ordinary lawmaker. I don’t award contracts, I don’t even have the financial capacity to do these things myself. I think, we should put party sentiments aside and help the people. Another issue is water. When I moved into Satellite town several years ago, there used to be portable pipe borne-water, now there in none. The residents in the community had to seek for my assistance to provide borehole for them, even when the money is not available. The riverine areas are worse.
For seven years, some riverine communities have not had electricity. I promised to assist them in providing electricity, which I did. But, to my greatest surprise, today, there is no light in the community. In Festac, I lost five houses to fire accident. For three hours, there were no fire service officers. In Abule-Ado, a furniture factory that was providing employment for people was completely razed. There is no fire fighting service in Amuwo Odofin. Sometimes, it takes more than four hours for fire service officers from Badagry or Ikeja to arrive Festac due to bad roads.

The residents are both in the PDP and All Progressives Congress (APC) parties. So, we cannot punish them. It is the first time that PDP party won in Amuwo and we cannot say because they voted for PDP, they should suffer. They had been neglected even when they voted the ruling party in Lagos State. I want to appeal to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to come to the aid of the people in Amuwo Odofin. The state government is collecting revenue from Amuwo Odofin while the Federal Government is collecting tenement rate from Festac, yet their presence is not felt.
